Can a business exist without being seen by AIs?
For years, a company's visibility played out on search engines. The rise of generative AI is changing that logic: more and more users now ask their question directly and expect a recommendation. A new question arises — can a business exist without ever being seen by AIs? At LirenPrism, we measured it.
For years, a company's visibility played out mainly on search engines. A well-built website, solid search ranking and a regular presence on the web were often enough to be discovered by future customers.
The rise of generative artificial intelligence is gradually changing that logic. More and more users no longer look for a list of results: they ask a question directly to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Mistral and expect a recommendation.
A new question then arises: can a business exist… without ever being seen by AIs?
A simple measurement
To answer this question, we ran a measurement on a precise query: “How can I measure my brand's visibility in ChatGPT?”
The result is unequivocal. Across the 40 answers analyzed — 20 without web search and 20 with web search — our brand never appears: 0% presence without web search, 0% presence with web search.
This result does not mean that our company does not exist. It simply means that, for this question, the AI never considers it a relevant answer.
AIs do not answer in a vacuum
At the same time, the report shows that answers are not built from an endless pool of sources. In total, the answers analyzed draw on 227 citations coming from only 16 different domains. Some of these domains are cited several dozen times.
In other words, when the AI answers, it draws on a relatively limited set of references. This does not allow us to conclude that AIs deliberately ignore other companies. It does, however, show that certain sources hold a central place in how answers are constructed.
A new form of visibility
For a long time, being absent from Google meant being hard to find. Today, a new situation is emerging: a company can have a website, publish content, be active… while still being absent from the answers produced by an AI when a user is looking for a solution.
It is no longer just web presence that counts. It is the ability to be integrated into the recommendation mechanisms of AI engines.
It is important to distinguish what this measurement demonstrates from what it does not.
Established fact
For this query, this AI and this measurement campaign, a company can be entirely absent from the recommendations, even when web search is enabled. The results concern one precise formulation, one AI provider (Mistral) and 40 queries run according to a defined methodology; they do not allow us to claim that this company will be invisible across all AIs or all questions.
Recurring observation
For this query, AI answers appear to be built around a limited set of heavily cited sources. Visibility may change depending on the engine, the wording or the context.
Open question
At what point does a company genuinely begin to emerge in AI answers? Is it a matter of reputation? Content quality? Source diversity? Or do AIs mainly reproduce the visibility already acquired on the web? Today, the data does not yet allow us to answer.
But it already shows one essential thing: a business can exist… without being seen by AIs. And as conversational engines become a gateway to information, understanding this new visibility is becoming a strategic issue.
